Airsupra Warnings
This document provides essential safety information regarding the use of Airsupra (albuterol / budesonide). Please read carefully and consult your healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns.
Asthma Worsening: There is a rare risk of paradoxical bronchospasm, where symptoms of asthma may worsen, especially when using a new canister of Airsupra. This condition can be life-threatening if not addressed promptly. Discontinue use and contact your healthcare provider if you experience increased wheezing, shortness of breath, or coughing.
Allergic Reactions: Airsupra may cause serious allergic reactions in individuals allergic to albuterol or budesonide. Symptoms can include wheezing, dizziness, fainting, rash, itching, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the tongue or throat. Seek immediate medical attention if these occur.
Exacerbation of Pre-existing Conditions: Before starting Airsupra, inform your healthcare provider of any current or past medical conditions. This medication can exacerbate conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid issues, seizures, and diabetes. Regular monitoring of heart rate and blood pressure is advised.
Low Potassium Levels: Airsupra may cause temporary low potassium levels, particularly if you are taking diuretics. Symptoms include muscle pain, weakness, cramps, or abnormal heartbeat. Notify your provider if you experience these signs.
Increased Infection Risk: Airsupra can weaken your immune system, elevating the risk of infections like tuberculosis, chickenpox, and measles. Avoid using Airsupra if you have an active or recurrent infection without consulting your provider.
Adrenal Suppression: In rare cases, Airsupra may cause adrenal suppression, especially in individuals sensitive to steroids or those using the medication excessively. Symptoms include weakness, headache, and low energy. Your provider may recommend lab tests to monitor adrenal function.
Bone Loss Risk: Long-term use of Airsupra can lead to bone loss, particularly in individuals with osteoporosis or risk factors for bone fragility. Discuss your risk with your provider, who may suggest bone density evaluations.
Eye Health Concerns: Prolonged use of Airsupra can increase eye pressure, worsening glaucoma and causing cataracts. Report any vision changes, such as blurriness or discomfort, to your provider, who may recommend an eye exam.
Always follow your healthcare provider's guidance when using Airsupra and report any unusual symptoms or concerns promptly.
Airsupra Side Effects
When taking this medication, some individuals may experience mild side effects such as a dry or irritated throat, headache, hoarseness, or coughing as their body adjusts. These effects are generally not serious, but if they persist or worsen, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider. Monitoring your blood pressure is important, as the medication may cause an increase.
There are more serious side effects that, while rare, require prompt medical attention. These include white patches in the mouth or on the tongue, persistent sore throat, fever, chills, weakness, bone pain, nausea, vomiting, increased thirst or urination, vision problems, or signs of infection. In very rare cases, the medication can lead to severe breathing problems or asthma attacks immediately after use, known as paradoxical bronchospasm. If sudden wheezing occurs, seek urgent medical help.
Additionally, severe side effects necessitating immediate care include chest pain, fast or irregular heartbeat, and symptoms of a severe allergic reaction such as rash, itching, swelling (particularly of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, and trouble breathing. It's crucial to be aware of these symptoms and seek medical assistance if they occur. Always communicate with a healthcare provider regarding any concerns or unusual effects.
Airsupra Interactions
What is AIRSUPRA good for?
AIRSUPRA is used for the treatment of asthma. It is a combination medication that helps to relax and open the airways in the lungs, making it easier to breathe and reducing asthma symptoms.
What is the difference between albuterol and AIRSUPRA?
Albuterol and AIRSUPRA are both medications used to treat respiratory conditions, but they have different compositions and uses. Albuterol is a short-acting beta-agonist (SABA) that is commonly used as a rescue inhaler to quickly relieve symptoms of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by relaxing the muscles in the airways. AIRSUPRA, on the other hand, is a combination inhaler that contains both albuterol and budesonide. Budesonide is a corticosteroid that helps reduce inflammation in the airways. AIRSUPRA is used for both quick relief and as a maintenance treatment to help control and prevent symptoms of asthma. In summary, while albuterol is primarily used for immediate relief, AIRSUPRA provides both immediate relief and long-term control of asthma symptoms due to its combination of a bronchodilator and an anti-inflammatory agent.
How long does it take AIRSUPRA to work?
AIRSUPRA, which is used for the treatment of asthma, typically begins to work within minutes after inhalation. However, the full therapeutic effect may take longer to be noticeable. It is important for patients to follow their healthcare provider's instructions regarding usage for optimal results.
